Humidity is Related to Mold Growth

1.  Growth of Mold

2.  Growth of Other Bioaerosols

According to North Carolina State Cooperative Extension,(College of Agriculture and Life Sciences)
“Bioaerosols are extremely small living organisms or fragments of living things suspended in the air”.  they are invisible.  Problems with bioaerosols are reactions of the allergic response and infection which can’t be serious. Humidity is related to growth of both mold and other bioaerosols.

Bioaerosols

Dust mites
Molds.
Fungi
spores.
Pollen.
Bacteria.
Viruses
amoebas
fragments of plant material.
Human and pet dander

Reactions To Mold and Other Bioaerosols:

  1. Rashes
  2. Hay fever
  3. asthma
  4. runny noses

Allergic reactions can lead to more severe reactions that make life absolutely miserable.  These responses can become serious and lead to oversensitivity and serious conditions like bacterial pneumonia.  “Hypersensitivity Pnuemonitis ” occurs when a person develops a severe allergic reaction. It is not an infection itself; however, repeated episodes can lead to infection such as bacterial pneumonia. Essentially, the person becomes over sensitize to small amounts of the allergen.

Over Sensitivity Can Result in:

  1. Tightness in the chest.
  2. Coughing
  3. Difficulty in breathing.
  4. Low grade fever.
  5. Muscle aches
  6. Low grade fever
  7. headaches

Molds, Mildews, Bacteria and Dust Mites Need:

1.  Warmth

2.  Moderate to High Humidity (Above 50%)

*The heart of the matter is that humidity is bad news. Keep humidity  below 50% bio aerosols such as mold cannot grow.  Molds, mildews, bacteria, and dust mites thrive in the same conditions: warm and moderate to high humidity. A constant supply of moisture is necessary for them to grow.*

The Many Places that Mold and Other Bio aerosol Thrive are All  Wet:

Air conditioning ducts      humidity reservoirs         humidity duct pans       shower heads       humidifier reservoirs

  1. Toilets.
  1. Ice machines.
  1. Water damaged carpets.
  1. Ceiling panels.
 More Places to Find  Mold:

Basements, basement crawl spaces, shower stalls, shower curtains, bathroom walls,  attics due leaky or improperly built roofs, leaky plumbing, walls, ceilings floors, insulation, air ducts, laundry room:  dirty laundry, improperly vented dryers, soiled trash cans, air conditioning ducts, peeling drywall, leaking roofs, refrigerator specifically frost free, carpeting in a finished basement, closed doors of rooms in a basement, beneath wallpaper, paneling, dog’s dish, dirty garbage can, refrigerator with moldy food, finished basements…

Take care not to store finished building products in basement:  carpet, drywall, foundation walls and floor joints. Many places to find mold.  Prevent mold by keeping it dry. Keeping your house dry also keeps the levels of bioaerosols.  Molds, mildews, bacteria and dust mites all need:

More Tips to Keep Humidity Down; Keep it Dry

1.  Promote airflow.

2.  Prevent Mold:  Leave Basement Dehumidifier On as long as it is Humid

3.  Repair Leaks ASAP; Mold Grows Within 24 to 48 Hours of Water Intrusion.

4.  Use High Powered Fans to Dry Water In Basement.

5.  Open Window an Inch To Leave Moisture Out in The Bathroom.  Use Exhaust Fan.

6.  Don’t Be Fooled:  Basement Mold Occurs If You Leave It Alone.

7. Stop Moisture; Stop Mold

8.  Use a hygrometer to monitor humidity.  Make sure it is below 50%

It cannot be overstated.  To prevent mold from occurring in the most common place:  DEHUMIDIFY THE BASEMENT WITH A BASEMENT DEHUMIDIFIER.  Use dehumidifiers anywhere there is a moisture problem that cannot be controlled by other means. This will also help to keep the level of bioaerosols down.

Prevent Mold & Bioaerosols; Dehumdifers Work to Dry the Home

  1. Basement Dehumidifier:  Make sure the square footage is somewhat accurate.  If it is really wet, use a dehumidifier that pulls moisture at a higher rate.
  2. Whole House Dehumidifier: attaches to HVAC system or stand alone.
  3. Crawl Space Dehumidifier:  Dirt crawl spaces transpire  producing mold.
  4. Small Dehumidifier/Room Dehumidifier:  small bathrooms, rooms tha lack airflow
  5. Portable Dehumidifier:  Used in boats, small offices

The whole point is to keep it dry. Know the wet places that mold can lurk about.  If it’s wet , it can have mold and other bioaerosols.  Mold, mildews and dust mites are the most common causes of health problems in the home.  These bioaerosols are easy to control.

I would be careful in treatment in that some treatments include very strong chemicals that are harsh for those with lung problems. Many of my readers such as myself have mold illness, asthma, mold allergies, allergies, etc and battle year round symptoms. I love the fact that you have a “be on the look out approach” to mold prevention. I wish more people thought this way. Consider listing my site in my resource section. Thanks for sharing such valuable info.
