Warning! Sources of Indoor Air Pollution to Avoid

Sources of Indoor Air Pollution  :  What Products to Avoid:

There are many other products in our house that can also add to indoor air pollution.  According to Rodale, scientists at Silent Spring Institute reviewed more than 200 products for hazardous chemical content.

“This is the first large peer-reviewed study of its kind that has looked at such a wide range of products for hormone disruption and asthma. “

Their goal is to help people to know what to avoid.  Their primary focus was to look for chemicals that trigger breathing problems and reproductive problems.

Nasty Chemicals And How They Destroy Health: Be on the Lookout for the Health Destroyers

Here is what they looked at (170 products)

Avoid These Groups of Products/They Harm Your Health

Silent Spring Researches concluded that avoiding these 3 groups of products in your home will improve health.  You cannot possibly avoid every source of Indoor Air Pollution, yet these are groups of products considered having serious impact on your health.

1.   Fragranced products:  many fragrances in soap, your makeup, strawberry scented shampoo, They note that any product that has, up fragrance is likely to have a large amount of chemicals

There are 3000 chemicals used to make synthetic fragrances, and one product can contain anywhere from 30 to 500 of them. These chemicals run released into the air and can combine to create cancer-causing formaldehyde and ultra-fine particles that cause respiratory problems. The highest level of fragrances are contained in home air fresheners, dryer sheets, perfumes.

2.  Vinyl curtains and bedding: Silent Spring determined that shower curtains contain 28% phthalates by weight.  Phthalates are linked to asthma in infertility. The irony is, if you enclose a pillow and a vinyl cover to avoid allergy and asthma problems, you’re actually triggering asthma problems. It also contains BPA, a hormone disruptor (to prevent plastic from breaking down) and glycol ether, which is associated with low sperm count and asthma in the pillow protector.

3.  Anything labeled “antibacterial”:  The two most common ingredients in antibacterial products are triclosan and tryclocarban.  In fact, personal care products are considered over-the-counter drugs if they contain these ingredients and cleaners that use these products are consider pesticides. Therefore, both chemicals must be listed on the labels. Not all product products list triclosan, a dish soap contained this product without listing it.  As our country has turned into a Germ-a- Phobic land, production of antibacterial products has skyrocketed and become diverse. Public demand stems from the fear of germs ignoring the potential toxicity of the product. They include: antibacterial towels, pace, workout gear, bed sheets, and even cutting boards. Scientists think the triclosan and triclocarban could also be a cause and contributing to the meteor rise in drug resistant bacteria over that time period.

 3 Big Things to Avoid:

1. Fragranced Products like  Air Fresheners

2. Vinyl Shower Curtains & Bedding

3.   Antibacterial Products

This article from Rodale ends by telling us that we cannot spend our way to fix this problem.  Chemicals are everywhere. Theron Randolph try to warn us years ago of the impact of indoor air pollution on our health. He was looked at as being a medical lunatic.  As we know, money talks.

Plan of Action to Clean the Air

  1. Own the least amount of stuff possible.
  2. Certainly read the labels, using the most natural products available. To make money companies will continue to hide how things are made and what they contain. This will require vigilance by consumers and scientist to find healthy alternatives.
  3. Purchase & run allergy air purifiers.

Mold Patients Have the Double Whammy:  Mold Exposure makes them constantly sick.  Indoor air pollution just adds to the problem.

For the mold patient, there are usually many symptoms. The symptoms are certainly aggravated by Indoor Air Pollution.

*Mold is Linked Directly to Indoor Air Pollution. Mold grows in High Humidity. Chemicals are Released During High Humidity Also.*
