1. Dehumidify your basement/ Keep Your Home Dry To kill mold, we must cut off off any moisture source.  Starting in the basement, moisture is naturally found.; so is mold. It is most important to keep all of the home dry.  Starting in the basement, use a basement dehumidifier. Basement dehumidifiers are made to handle the capacity or square footage of your basement.  The goal is to lower humidity to around 50%. Figure out the square footage of your basement and then make the purchase.  Consider how cold your basement gets as there are different temperatures where individual dehumidifiers will freeze up.  Energy efficiency is another must to consider.  Mold needs it to be on the damp side to grow.  Mold needs warm, dark and dampness to grow.  Basements are usually where mold originates. We start in the basement because mold typically starts in basements.

If you have a crawl space, the space should be assessed by a mold remediation specialist and remedied.  Typically this included sealing the area with plastic and using a crawl space dehumidifier calibrated to the area and relative humidity. http://stopmoldcold.com/crawl-space-mold-andcondensation/ The crawl space dehumidifier works to blend the relative humidity of the whole house to ensure that basement mold does not develop due to high humidity. Bathrooms:  Use a window fan to vent out moisture especially after a shower.  Also turn on exhaust fan after showers.  If that does not work, use a room dehumidifier. If there are any other rooms which are problematic, room dehumidifiers should work.  If you need several; consider a whole home system Keep your home dry by adding a whole home dehumidifier to the HVAC system. This will ensure that the whole home will be dry especially during the humid summers. Air conditioning does dry the air but alone is not enough to dry the basement.  A basement dehumidifier or whole home dehumidifier is still recommended.  There are other systems that ensure that your house will be dry.  Remember, if you fail to kill mold in the basement and you open the basement door, it escapes into the rest of your home as invisible intruder.

Allergy air purifiers scrub and kill mold and other biological contaminants.  These are the “nasties” we all want to get rid of:  bacteria, germs, viruses, fungi (mold), pollen, and chemicals. The air is drawn into the machine in caught in the HEPA filter.  HEPA filtration is 99.97% effective in capturing contaminants like mold.  If you look into the air, you will see nothing floating.  However, mold is invisible.  There are many features that can be purchased in an allergy air purifier. Different Types Of Allergy Air Purifiers/Components: You Must Read This star (1)star (1)star (1) 3.  Clean every surface in the house with Borax or some green mold cleaning solution Borax is easy on the lungs and is effective at killing mold.  Green means the product causes no reaction.  Every surface must be cleaned because mold is capable of traveling through the house.  Kill mold on every surface.  Now this means everything you owned needs to be cleaned. Throw out any obvious moldy object like a cardboard box in the basement or wood that is black.  Anything porous in a wet basement is likely to be moldy.  Carpeting in the basement must be pitched. star (1)star (1)star (1) 4.  Hepa vacuum every surface to finish killing mold. Dead mold spores although killed still evoke a mold response and must be captured by HEPA filtration in a quality HEPA vacuum.  Hepa vacuum often as mold is always in the house and is capable of growing in dirt.  A quality HEPA vacuum should not spew dirt into the air.  If using a cleanable HEPA filter, clean it outside or you will be defeating the purpose. Don’t mess around with mold.  Know how to prevent mold and kill mold.  Mold exposure can cause permanent damage to delicate lungs of a baby or small child.  Just ask the folks after Katrina and Super Storm Sandy.  The battle to prevent mold and kill mold was a fierce one which many have lost and will in the future.  Amazingly so, there are folks living in mansions that lose everything from a hidden leak .  Rich or poor, mold does not care. star (1)star (1)star (1)Purchase A Dehumidifier From the Allergy Buyers Club: Huge Selection With The Best Prices on The Market or A Free Restaurant.com Gift Card

Hi Judy, Does my daughter have to through out clothes. She can see where in the threads of their clothing has stuff growing. They just got a different couch now on that couch, She says it looks, very small like sea urchins. It has only been in the house for 2 days. They cleaned everything with bleach. She has sores on her and she says it is pokey and itchy. They are trying to find a different house right now. But it is affecting her mental state.

    Thank you,

    Judy Garcia

    • Make sure that she is very careful with her clothing. I would advise her to add simple additives to her washing routine that will not harm her clothes: baking soda and Borax. These she should have on hand. They both kill mold. They can also be used in cleaning. I recommend using Vital Oxide in general cleaning as it kills so much more.

    • That is most likely a mold rash. Bleach will not kill all mold especially on porous surfaces. Tell her to go back and use a combo of Borax, a general cleaner and even some baking soda mixed in water and re clean. Especially any fabric areas like the couch. Let them dry completely in the sun. Then use the HEPA vacuum to thoroughly vacuum. Dead mold spores will still evoke a reaction. I had a similar situation and had to use a steroid cream to get my skin to calm down. She needs to wear a mask and gloves when cleaning. This is important also, hang plastic over the door, tape it off for the room you are working on. Mold spores are invisible and when disturbed will move to the next room. Use a fan to vent outside. If you can afford to buy a decent air purifier for probable $200.00 for her bedroom, it would help.
